Seaweed update Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Seaweed update Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

As we are daily flying above Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya and Tulum it is easy for us to give you an update about the current situation of the presence os Seaweed in the ocean and along the shore. In the past months we have received and answered many questions; so it seemed like a good idea to post an update with photos taken in November 2018.

Cancun and Isla Mujeres

When you think Cancun stands for white sandy beaches, well….. you are right. Currently, November 2018, the beaches of the Cancun Hotel zone are gorgeous, just gorgeous. Clean and Seaweed Free. The resorts north of Cancun in Playa Mujeres, like the Excellence, have some Seaweed, but ab-so-lu-te-ly in an acceptable and natural way. Also Playa Norte in Isla Mujeres is completely Seaweed free.

So enjoy your Seaweed free stay in Cancun when you are booked for Cancun Hotels and Resorts like Nizuc, Bay Resort, The Royal, Hyatt Ziva and JW Marriott.

Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya

Good news Update. Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen have considerable less seaweed than there was in the past months. Now, November 2018., some parts are completely Seaweed free. And in the parts that still have some Seaweed, it is within acceptable limits. The amount of Seaweed that some spots have, looks natural and does not smell.

We see hotels and resorts like Mahekal, Playacar Palace, Xcaret, RIU, Mayakoba, Vidanta, Rosewood, Hardrock completely Seaweed free.

The situation in Tulum has improved amazingly. The waters in front of archaeological site of Tulum were brown of seaweed weeks ago. Now the views are postcard proof. Caribbean turquoise, clean waters.

Hotels and Resorts like Azulik, Mezzanine, Raw Love, Be Tulum and Los Amigos Beach Tulum are Seaweed free or have little Seaweed

The West side of Cozumel Island is Seaweed free most of the days. The coasts are clear for hotels and resorts like Iberostar, Occidental, Fiesta Americana, Presidente, Hotel Cozumel, Cozumel Palace, Hotel B and Westin.

The East Side (Wild side) of Cozumel has some Seaweed at some spots, but the beaches are still gorgeous. And in our opinion the amount of Seaweed is not disturbing at all.

Feel free anytime to reach out to the Fly Cozumel team for a current update about Seaweed in Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Tulum: At your service!

What is the current situation in Tulum is there much sea weed? From past experience is March a good time to visit?

    • Fly Cozumel January 7, 2019 at 1:53 pm - Reply

Hi Matt, Tulum is relatively clean, some parts have some seaweed, others are 100% clean. March is too early to say. And there is no pattern.

Do you know what they anticipate in Costa Maya and Cozumel for early April?

    • Fly Cozumel January 7, 2019 at 1:49 pm - Reply

No we don´t Sue. Sorry. We can see the real situation from the air and looking at wind directions carefully predict a couple of days in advance. Feel free to reach out again in April. Generally speaking West Cozumel is sea weed free.

Sirenis Riviera Maya is where we will be at the end of Febuary in 2019. What is the current condition of the beach there, as it is rather isolated. What is the forecast coming up for the seaweed? Thanks! We love it in that area, but are a little concerned

    • Fly Cozumel January 2, 2019 at 10:52 pm - Reply

Connie, hello. We understand your concern. Though its too early to say anything. Feel free to reach out later in time.

Your site is great! I booked in for Dec. 22 at the Secrets Silversands Resort. Do you know if I should expect to see lots of seaweed and muddy waters or will I see beautiful clear Caribbean Sea?

    • Fly Cozumel December 18, 2018 at 9:24 am - Reply

We flew over this weekend and it was great Eric.

  18. Sagar December 2, 2018 at 7:03 pm - Reply

There was just too much seaweed in Playa del Carmen today. Do you know what’s the scene in Tulum? Should I expect the same in Tulum tomorrow?

    • Fly Cozumel December 18, 2018 at 9:20 am - Reply

The different wind direction brought in some seaweed in Playa del Carmen. Tulum is cleaner than Playa at the moment.

  19. Jesse November 29, 2018 at 3:28 pm - Reply

Hello, there. Staying at Excellence Riviera Cancun in December (the week before Christmas) and was wondering if you have an update there? Also, do you expect it will keep improving or get worse again?

I believe the Excellence you quoted in the article is Playa Mujeres. Thanks so much!
