Mayan Ruins of Tulum from Cozumel
Tulum is quite different from other Mayan sites; the ruins are situated on steep cliffs overlooking the ocean.
Tulum is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city serving as a major port for Cobá.
The ruins are situated on tall cliffs above the beautiful coastline.
Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico.
Visiting the Mayan Ruins of Tulum during the day can be hot and hectic; it’s a very popular attraction in Mexico.
Wouldn’t it be much nicer to have the whole site (almost) to yourself?
Flying from Cozumel by airplane allows you to visit Tulum early in the morning, out of the hot sun and without many tourists that arrive on day trip tours by bus/car.
About the Tulum Ruins
This Maya site may formerly have been known by the name Zama, meaning City of Dawn, because it faces the sunrise.
Tulum is also the Mayan word for fence or wall.
There are three major structures of interest at the Tulum site: El Castillo, the Temple of the Frescoes, and the Temple of the Descending God are the three most famous buildings.
The site’s main structure, El Castillo (the Castle), was used as a lighthouse! Two small windows at the top allowed sailors to navigate the ocean reef at dusk. If the captain could see daylight through both windows, that meant he was on the right course.
Below the temple is a secluded beach that you can actually swim at while you’re visiting the site. Make sure to bring your swimsuit! Swimming under the old ruined temple on the cliff above you is an incredible experience.
Tulum archaeological site is relatively compact compared with many other Mayan sites in the area and is one of the best-preserved coastal Mayan sites.
