Is there an airport in Playa del Carmen?

Playa del Carmen is a paradise of turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, delicious gastronomic options, fun nightlife, and a relaxed atmosphere, attracting thousands of tourists to spend unforgettable vacation days.

This place’s unique magical vibe makes it the main destination of the Riviera Maya, a tourist region of Mexico that extends for more than 130 km along the Caribbean Sea in the Yucatan peninsula, from Puerto Morelos to Punta Allen. This region’s natural wealth includes an abundant jungle packed with numerous Mayan archaeological sites, stunning cenotes, and of course, an incredible coastline protected by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the 2nd most extensive reef line in the world. The wide variety of activities make this destination a favorite for scuba divers, eco adventurers, and families looking for unforgettable experiences.

Playa del Carmen’s rapid growth seems to have no end, from the most impressive resorts to a great offer of condos and houses available for anyone that wants to live just a few steps from the beautiful Caribbean Sea. Once just a small town inhabited by fishermen, Playa has become one of the world’s most important tourist destinations in only a few years. Due to its vast tourist offer, Playa del Carmen is today known as “The Heart of the Riviera Maya,” and without a doubt, a must-see if you are on vacation in Cancun or Cozumel.

After reading these lines, you are probably already packing your bags and googling for flights to visit Playa, only to realize that there are no direct flights to Playa del Carmen. Questions may start flowing around your mind: How is it possible? How can I get to Playa del Carmen? Keep calm and do not panic!

Is there an airport in Playa del Carmen?

Due to its proximity to the Cancun International Airport, to travel to Playa del Carmen, you must first fly there and then transport yourself by bus, transfer, or better yet, take a convenient private flight to Playa del Carmen. So why are we talking about private flights but not about flying directly to Playa?” Because there is, in fact, an airport in Playa del Carmen, but since there’s no control tower or customs lines, it’s an airdrome.

But don’t get us wrong; the Playa del Carmen Airport is the most important in the region because, as said before, for its strategic location, it is the connection point between other important tourist destinations in the area, such as Cancun, Cozumel, and Tulum.

The Playa del Carmen airport is the busiest transfer port in the Riviera Maya, surpassing even the ferries that transfer several hundred people a day to and from the Island of Cozumel. The recent global contingency caused by COVID-19, which significantly affected world tourism, drove the number of ferry transfers between Playa and Cozumel to decrease drastically as the service was suspended for months. However, the need to transport between these destinations required a solution, and the Playa del Carmen Airport helped many people, from health professionals to essential workers and anyone who needed to move between these destinations. As you may know, the Mexican Caribbean is exposed to various meteorological phenomena such as storms and hurricanes, forcing the ferry service from Playa to be suspended, making the airport the only option to get to these destinations quickly. More than 4,300 flights were made from the Playa del Carmen airport to its main destinations such as Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Tulum, Cancun, and tourist places such as Chichen Itza, the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, and Mérida, in 2020 alone.

Where is the Playa del Carmen airport located?

One of the advantages of the Playa del Carmen airport is its location, in the city’s tourist area, so getting there to take both planned and last minute flights is very easy. There are several parking lots, or you can even walk since it’s on 15th Avenue South, just a few steps from 5th Avenue, the city’s main touristic corridor. As it is not an international airport, the security and boarding protocols are more flexible and faster to carry out, reducing the waiting time to fly. Visiting the airport can even be a lot of fun as it is exciting to watch the constant take-off and landing of both small planes and helicopters, pretty close to the ground.

When vacationing, travelers seek to take advantage of every minute available. Taking private flights from the Playa del Carmen airport to make the most of the vacations is an excellent option for you.

How to get to Playa del Carmen or Cozumel from Cancun?

Cancun’s international airport locates 40 minutes away from Playa del Carmen, so you need to pick a transfer or a costly taxi cab to get to Playa. Then, to get to Cozumel, get to the ferry terminal, and then board for a 1-hour trip sailing to the island, so consider spending half a day of your vacations on transportation. There’s no better way to get to the Island! I’m a Playa local and love visiting Cozumel but hate the ferry: it’s slow, expensive, and boring, so decided to book a flight (at a very convenient rate) and now I don’t think I’ll ever take the ferry again! the plane is gorgeous, and service was great. I recommend it for anyone that values time and is up for the best views of the Caribbean!
