I’m writing this with my heart still beating after living one of the best experiences ever! Although I’m one of those been there, done that, guys always living for the thrill and searching for new adventures, I can still be surprised as I have an extensive bucket list to complete that keeps growing as I do. Most of the best things I’ve done in my life have come unexpected, and honestly, I never thought of living my latest experience, which was Flying from Cancun To Cozumel in a private plane!
Since I was a kid, I have always had a special connection to the sea. It astounds me every single time I get to visit it. Five years ago, I fulfilled the dream of living close to the ocean when I moved from Mexico City to Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya, very close to Cancun and minutes away from the Island of Cozumel. I’m fortunate to live minutes away from the gorgeous white sand beaches, and I get to visit them at any chance. Here, I’ve done some of the craziest things, like diving with bull sharks, swimming in underwater rivers, go camping in the Sian Ka’an Reserve, explore the incredible cenotes, and many more. I also embarked on the wildest adventure of them all, which is raising a happy family. Although there’s nothing more thrilling than raising a small 18-month-old boy with my wife, living here always presents opportunities to try new activities, so imagine the feel of getting invited to take a private flight over the imposing Caribbean sea!
If you’re an avid traveler, you may be thinking that there’s nothing exciting about taking a plane, but this was not your average commercial flight; this was a private flight to a Caribbean island! Ever thought of how it may feel to be a rockstar? Well, I’m pretty sure it must be like this! So let me tell you how that went on.
You must know I was invited by Fly Cozumel to write about this adventure. While I’ll be getting paid for this article, honestly, I never thought I would want to write about it the minute I stepped down the plane with a smile on my face and wanting to try it again, and again! From the first moment I got on board to that satisfying moment of safe landing (yeah, it’s always the best part, right?) in the gorgeous Island of Cozumel, I consider this is by far one of the best things to do in Cancun. Instead of just listing all the benefits of taking a private flight to Cozumel, I thought of telling you from the heart, how it all went.
I got to a special section of the Cancun International Airport, where I met Captain Cortés, the one in charge of flying the plane to the Island. While we waited for two other lucky passengers arriving from Brazil to visit Cozumel for some diving tours, Captain Francisco Cortés, a former commercial pilot with plenty of flying hours, told me about the fun of flying this private charts to Cozumel. Although it is a daily routine for him, he loves seeing the passengers’ reactions once the plane smoothly takes off over the Caribbean sea. The cap also loves meeting a lot of interesting people while on duty. By the way, when he told me I was going to fly on a Cessna, I could not help but think of any of those 80’s movie planes, where the hero always has to pilot a very old rusty aircraft (not sure why, but they always look old and unreliable, right?) Also, the only time I had to fly on a small plane was to get to Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, and it looked old, rusty, and unreliable! Fortunately, I lived to tell, but that flight wasn’t pleasant at all. Well, not this time, not on this plane; the beautiful blue & white Cessna 206 TD looked brand new, and later I learned that it was bought just last year and taken by Cap Cortés himself, straight from the factory at Wichita, Kansas, to Cancun. That brought peace to my soul as I knew that I was in good hands.
Anyway, the passengers arrived with a little delay, and that’s when I thought of the first advantages of booking a private flight: they’ll always wait for you! The couple was so happy about that, cause I’m sure that starting a vacation with a missed flight is something that no one would like to experience.
I knew from the moment we boarded that this would be quite an adventure, but never really thought it would involve so many emotions! I mean, I’ve seen the sea from above before, but never thought of doing it just 1000 feet over the surface. The indescribable beauty of that blue marvel is mesmerizing, astonishing! I could see the waves, some birds fishing, small boats, and the Mesoamerican Reef, the 2nd largest barrier in the world. The Caribbean sea is famous for its turquoise, clear waters, but I never thought I would witness so many shades of blue, it was simply amazing. The passengers couldn’t stop shooting pics, while the Captain gave us some highlights about the plane, the route, and the destination. -Wait, did I say that we were talking during the flight? Aren’t these planes supposed to be super noisy?- Well, yeah, but the 206 is packed with modern headsets for comms and noise isolation, so we were all joking and enjoying the ride at all times. The plane is also equipped with A/C and a big screen showing the flight route; so the ride is pleasant and enjoyable.
Flying from Cancun to Cozumel in a private plane also allows passengers to contemplate the Island’s real size and see some inaccessible, protected areas. I never thought it was so big! I’ve been to Cozumel a few times before, and the only other way to get there is boarding a tedious ferry for a 50 minutes ride, something I would never recommend for those that get easily seasick. So when we got to the Island in only fifteen minutes, it felt like it is a great decision to book a private plane, totally worthy. It’s also discreet as passengers don’t have to deal with long lines, slow airport customs, and many people. In these times, social distancing is the best way to keep safe and healthy, so this is the best option for those who value time, privacy, and health.
Fifteen minutes, that’s all it took me to realize that you don’t have to be a rockstar to actually feel like one. I also will never forget the stunning views of the Riviera Maya coastline, the enormous resorts, the Golf courses, and Cozumel Island. I was so amazed that I forgot to take out my phone for some pics, but I captured some of the best “memory snapshots” ever.
So finally, would I recommend it? Totally. Who would’ve thought that taking a private flight would be so accessible but also so much fun? Not me, honestly. I was quite impressed and even a bit sad that it ended so fast! But when I saw the other passengers so excited, so happy for getting so quickly to their destination, that’s when it hit me; that this is by far the best way to get from Cancun to Cozumel.
Thanks, Fly Cozumel; let’s do this again soon!
