Tulum is quite different from other Mayan sites ;the Ruins are situated on steep cliffs overlooking the ocean. Tulum is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city serving as a major port for Cobá. The ruins are situated on tall cliffs, along the beautiful coast. Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Visiting the Mayan Ruins of Tulum during the day can be hot and hectic; it’s a very popular attraction in Mexico. Wouldn’t it be much nicer to have the whole site (almost) to yourself? Flying from Cozumel by Airplane allows you to visit Tulum early in the morning, out of the hot sun and without many tourists that arrive on day trip tours by bus/car.
This Maya site may formerly have been known by the name Zama, meaning City of Dawn, because it faces the sunrise. Tulúm is also the Mayan word for fence or wall. There are three major structures of interest at the Tulum site. El Castillo, the Temple of the Frescoes, and the Temple of the Descending God are the three most famous buildings. The site’s main structure, El Castillo (the Castle), was used as a lighthouse! Two small windows at the top allowed sailors to navigate the ocean reef at dusk. If the captain could see daylight through both windows, that meant he was on the right course. Below the castle is a secluded beach that you can actually swim at while you’re visiting the site. Make sure to bring your swimsuit! Swimming under the old ruined castle on the cliff above you is a pretty cool experience. The walls surrounding the site allowed the Tulum fort to be defended against invasions. Tulum had access to both land and sea trade routes, making it an important trade hub.
Tulum archaeological site is relatively compact compared with many other Mayan sites in the area, and is one of the best-preserved coastal Mayan sites. We will fly you in our comfortable Airplane from Cozumel in 20 minutes to Tulum and you will arrive before the crowds. The flight is beautiful over the Caribbean waters and partly over Cozumel. Our private guide will be waiting for you in Tulum to show you this amazing MUST SEE archaeological site. After visiting the ruins a traditional Mexican lunch will be served. The total time of this Tulum by Airplane Tour from Cozumel Tour is between 4 and 5 hours.
