If you’re in for an eco-adventure, we recommend visiting one of Mexico’s most amazing places, found pretty close to Cozumel and definitely worth visiting.
Visiting Sian Kaan / Sian Ka’an, the entrance to heaven.
One of the best things to do in the Riviera Maya and Cozumel is visiting the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. The Mayans believed that this land was blessed by the gods, so they decided to name this site Sian Ka’an, which means “the entrance to heaven” or “where heaven begins”.
In Sian Ka’an, nature lives in all its splendor. The many different ecosystems and hundreds of flora and fauna species make this Reserve an excellent place for sustainable ecotourism. This paradise of pristine beauty is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. For years, it remained closed to visitors and businesses to ensure its preservation. Fortunately, the efforts to protect it have yielded results, which is why today it is possible to visit this place and enjoy it responsibly.
Sian Ka’an is home to diverse marine environments coexisting in harmony; From the sandy beaches to mangroves, its extensive wetlands, and the reef barrier, which is part of the second-longest reef in the world, the impressive Reserve leaves visitors speechless for its beauty. Through its mangrove canals, once used by the Mayans to get to cities like Muyil or Tulum, it is possible to observe the endemic fauna and experience nature in its full glory, like manatees, crocodiles, turtles, and migratory birds, all living free in their original habitat.
How to get to Sian Ka’an?
Visiting the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve is possible for travelers visiting Cozumel and the Riviera Maya. Still, we must say that it is not easy to get there, and it will take a lot of your precious vacation time. There are no paved roads in Sian Ka’an, so if you really want to venture into the Reserve by yourself, it is recommended to rent a Jeep or a big truck; otherwise, the experience may not be pleasant at all.
The entrance to Sian Ka’an is at the end of the Tulum’s Hotel Zone, so you have to consider the time to get there, which can take from 2 to 3 hours depending on where you’re staying. A federal fee is required to enter the Reserve, and once you’ve paid it, you’re ready to go. You’ll find some access to the beach and the lagoon along the road, but since this is not a tourist zone, don’t expect to find essential services such as bathrooms, stores, or restaurants. For a fair price, some local fishermen living inside the Reserve can take you on a boat to search for dolphins and turtles in the sea and across one of the lagoons to spot manatees and birds. But for a better first experience -and if you have enough time for a whole day adventure- our recommendation is to book a tour for your first visit.
