Spending a vacation in the Mexican Caribbean is surely a great- if not the best- idea to create unforgettable memories and having an awesome time. Each year, travelers from around the world visit Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel for the gorgeous white sand beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters, and the many activities to do in this touristic region.
From diving to spearfishing to the many archaeological expeditions available, there’s a vast list of activities to do in the Mexican Caribbean is definitely a top destination that you should visit at least once in your life.
But, due to its location, the Caribbean is an area of variable weather. Although it’s sunny and warm most of the year, it can also rain for days. It is also exposed to many environmental phenomena, such as tropical storms or even hurricanes. As in any tropical climate, the rains in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel are persistent, especially during Summer, September, and October, so if you’re visiting during these months, you’ll likely get a good soak at least once.
While locals have managed to adapt and learn how to live with that, most tourists come to this beautiful destination without any awareness. Knowing what to do in the Mexican Caribbean when it rains can be the difference between a great and the worst experience ever, so either if you’ve been planning your vacations for months or are already in any of these destinations, this list of things to do in the Mexican Caribbean when it rains may help you have a great time despite the weather.
Rains here are persistent and so random that it may start raining cats and dogs, and ten minutes later, you’ll see the shining sun and the blue skies again. Sometimes it rains in one street and not on the next one – not kidding – so if you’re sipping cocktails on a sunbed and see a storm coming, chances are that it will pass before you can pick up your things and run back to your room. But if you really can’t handle the rain or if it keeps raining for days (yeah, it happens, too), don’t worry, you still can enjoy your vacations; here are our suggestions:
GO BAR HOPPING
Yeah, it may sound obvious, but if you’re walking along the 5th Avenue at Playa del Carmen or the Malecon in Cozumel and then the downpour surprises you, don’t think of locking up in your the hotel! Instead, enter the first bar you spot and order a beer bucket or a round of tequila shots! You’ll forget about the rain in no time, and who knows? You may end up making friends or listening to a great live band.
GO TO A CASINO
Yeah! Why not? Even if you’re not an expert gambler, casinos are super fun! And you may end up winning some good money! From sports booking to gambling machines, you’ll find some cool options around. Don’t forget to visit Playa’s classic, the Tequila Barrel, a legendary sportsbook/bar/restaurant for a wild fun night!
VISIT A MUSEUM
Traveling is about getting to learn about your destination’s culture, and there’s no better place than museums. Also, they make a great shelter on rainy days!
Cozumel’s Museum was recently reopened, and it’s better than ever. It offers 11 interactive exhibits where visitors will discover the origin, natural diversity, and resilience of its inhabitants in a playful, informed, and entertaining way. There are also 2 Temporary Exhibit rooms for local and international artists and a special room that pays tribute to 146 years of Cozumel’s Carnaval tradition. A cool activity, especially for rainy days.
One of Playa del Carmen’s best attractions is the 3D Museum of Wonders, where visitors become one with art. This museum’s artwork is created with 3-dimensional illusions that will make you question everything you see! What starts out as amazing images on the wall and the floor soon morphs into irresistible opportunities to ‘jump into the art’ and become an active part of the illusion. You’ll have a great time trying to get the best family photos in this interactive museum!
If you’re stuck in Cancun, there’s no better place to shelter from the rain than the Cancun Interactive Aquarium, located at La Isla Luxury Fashion Mall. This place is home to thousands of underwater creatures, from fish, reptiles, sea mammals, rays, and sharks! There’s an attraction called the Aquarium trek where you can actually go underwater and “walk” in the bottom of a tank surrounded by the many species available. It would be the best alternative if you looked forward to diving, and rain messes with your plans. Observe the fish’s characteristics, understand how an ecosystem works, and foster a sense of belonging through direct contact with certain organisms. Learn more and book your tickets here.
GO TO THE MOVIES
While it may sound weird to suggest going to a movie theater while on vacation, it’s a great plan for a rainy day. Plus, going to the movies in Mexico is most likely cheaper than in your country. Most Cinema Complex in Mexico are in mint condition and give the latest blockbusters, so don’t worry about missing the summer’s new hit because you are vacationing in paradise.
GET A TATTOO
Looking for an excuse? Well, there it is! Thank you, rainy weather! You know you want it. There are plenty of tattoo parlors in the Mexican Caribbean, so if you’re going to be stuck because of the rain, better get some art on your body, right? Just avoid silly ideas and get a nice piece, remember it’ll be with you for the rest of your life.
ENJOY SOME FUN IN THE RAIN
Unless a tropical storm or a hurricane is coming, it’s ok to stay on the beach or on the streets and enjoy the rain! You won’t feel cold as rain is a natural cooler for the warm – and sometimes scorching – weather. Remember: It’s just water! And as we said before, chances are that you won’t even have time to find a roof; it can suddenly start raining and then disappear in a few minutes, so you might as well enjoy these particular weather changes. Don’t forget that you’re on vacation, so enjoy every bit of it! If Gene Kelly even managed to sing in the rain, why couldn’t you?
ESCAPE TO ANOTHER PIECE OF PARADISE
While Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel are relatively close, the weather can differ in each city! Maybe it wasn’t in your plans, but you might like to take the chance and visit another gorgeous beach or a nearby island since you’re already here. So if you want to visit Cozumel from Cancun or get to Cozumel from Playa del Carmen, the fastest way and escape the rain, you can always book a private flight and get there in a few minutes.
As you can see, there’s plenty of things to do in the Mexican Caribbean when raining!
